Margaret Brown
🛑 A person I hurt 8 years ago messaged me out of the blue... My name is Margaret. I live somewhere in the UK. I rent a room. Not a flat — just a single room. In a house share with two strangers who, just like me, can't afford a place of their own. I work as a checkout assistant at a supermarket. Shift work. Mostly evening shifts. My schedule changes constantly. I make about £12.21 an hour. After taxes, it works out to roughly £1,800 a month. Sounds alright? Not really. Here are my actual expenses: Room rent: £840 (bills included, but no internet) Council Tax: £140 Gas & heating: £190 (I sit in a jumper all winter just to avoid turning it on) Electricity & water: £110 Broadband + phone bill: £40 Food & groceries: £300 (I hardly ever buy meat — it's far too expensive) Leftover: £200. You might think £200 is decent money. It isn't. Because that £200 goes towards everything I forgot about. And everything that happens tomorrow. And "tomorrow" always happens. Last month, my only decent pair of jeans ripped. Couldn't fix them. Bought a pair in a charity shop for £6 — they're too big, but I wear them anyway. I stopped buying makeup. My skincare routine is the cheapest £3 tub of Nivea cream that leaves my skin dry, but I just put up with it. My phone screen cracked six months ago. Can't afford a replacement — I just stuck sellotape over it so the glass doesn't cut my fingers. At work, lifting heavy crates and using constant scanners ruins my nails, and my hands are permanently dry. I look at female shoppers at the supermarket. Their well-kept hair, fresh manicures, nice clothes. And I keep thinking: "We live in the same city. But in completely different worlds." And then one day, I got a random message. Not even strange... I just genuinely never expected him to write to me ever again. I hurt him deeply 8 years ago, and I thought we would never speak again. He wrote: "Hi Margaret! I'm going to be passing through your town, fancy grabbing a cup of coffee?
