Chloe

🛑🇬🇧 Goodbye, Britain. You're doing my head in. I don't want to die broke at 35 in this shithole—I'm done. My name's Chloe, I'm 35. Until recently I've been living in a quiet area—a one-bedroom flat, ground floor, 24 square metres. Now it's September, the heat's letting up, but what happened this summer was absolutely mental. Constant noise from the street, stale air, rubbish piling up outside. You can't put air conditioning in these old buildings—and at +38 degrees, the flat became an oven. I worked at Tesco. Shifts from 6am to 11pm, mostly late—2pm to 10:30pm. Hourly rate: about £12.50. After tax, I brought home around £1,450 a month. Sounds alright? Bollocks. Here were my fixed costs: Rent: £760 Council Tax + Heating: £95 Travel card: £49 Internet and mobile: £45 Food: £280 Entertainment (just Netflix): £9 Clothes (Primark or sale): £25 Pharmacy: £15 Unexpected: £35 Left over: about £138. Evenings I'd come home at 11pm, get into bed, scroll through the timeline or Reels. At work I'd watch strangers' shopping trolleys all day—people just grabbing stuff without checking prices, while I was doing mental maths to see if I'd make it to payday. A month ago everything collapsed. Hours got cut—from full-time to part-time. Salary dropped from £1,450 to £910. I applied for top-up at the Job Centre, but processing takes two months. And rent was due on the 1st. Left to live on: £150. That's a fiver a day. I'd stand in the shop holding something for a minute before putting it back on the shelf. Then came the letter from HMRC: tax bill plus penalty charge. Same day, my landlord called: "Chloe, if rent's not here by the 1st, I'
