An' then they start laughin' about pissed-up lads in pubs just sinkin' pints an' watchin' footy. Like we're all just a bunch of hopeless alkies wastin' our lives. Honest? That's proper shite. Grimsby's just a normal post-industrial town on the east coast. Yeah, we ain't rich. Yeah, it's rough. But there's hundreds of places just like this all over the UK. Been workin' at Pelagia Grimsby for 6 years now. Fish processin' — cuttin' an' cleanin' white fish. Shifts are 10–12 hours, mostly nights. Hands are always in freezin' water, an' the smell of fish… it gets right inside you. I swear I'm like f*ckin' Aquaman at this point. Even after a shower it won't go — it's in your skin, your hair, your clothes. Girls used to take the piss. Now they don't even bother. Pay's about 28k a year before tax. Take home's like £1900–2100 dependin' on overtime. Sounds alright, yeah? But once you pay rent, bills, food, petrol an' try to save somethin'… you got nish. Or even minus. I live in an old council flat in East Marsh. 70s buildin'. Winter there's f*ckin' brutal. Walls are freezin', windows are shite, ventilation's basically non-existent. Every year the mold comes back — black spots in the corners, on the bathroom ceilin', behind the wardrobe. I tried sortin' it myself like 3 times, but it just comes back. Then last November the boiler properly died. Like, gone. Had to use electric heaters. Bills jumped straight to £320–350 a month. Started cuttin' everythin' — less hot water, lights off all the time, eatin' pasta an' rice on repeat. Then me car broke down. Old Vauxhall Corsa 2009. Gearbox started whinin', then just went.
