Why Is America So Much Richer Than Britain And Western Europe? Every time I go back to Britain, I have the same uncomfortable thought. Britain still looks rich. The countryside is beautiful. London still has its swagger. The old universities still impress, and the villages look like they belong on a postcard. Then you scratch beneath the surface. The houses are small and expensive, while the salaries are surprisingly low. Taxes are high, public services are under pressure, and many middle-class families feel as though they're working harder every year simply to stand still. France offers incredible food, beautiful cities and world-class culture, but it also has a bureaucracy that can make almost anything difficult. Germany still builds wonderful products, but the industrial powerhouse that dominated Europe for decades is beginning to lose momentum. So why is America so much richer? It's not because Americans are smarter. It's because America has built a system that creates more wealth. First, America is one giant marketplace. More than 340 million people. One language. One currency. One legal system. If you build a successful business in Texas, you can sell to customers across the entire country almost immediately. Europe doesn't work like that. Expanding across Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain means different languages, different regulations, different tax systems and different business cultures. Second, America celebrates ambition. Tell people in Silicon Valley you want to build a billion-dollar company and they'll probably ask how they can help. In much of Europe, people are more likely to tell you to be realistic. That difference in attitude matters. Third, America has the deepest investment markets in the world. Millions of ordinary Americans own stocks through retirement accounts and investment portfolios. When great companies succeed, millions of Americans succeed with them. That's one reason America produced Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google,
