The best advice I ever got came when I was 27 years old, making about $150 a month as a bag boy at a golf club. I heard one sentence that completely changed my life. It came from Brian Tracy. He said: “Invest 3 to 5% of your income in yourself.” Now, when you're making $150 a month, 5% isn't exactly going to Harvard Business School. But I took him seriously. I started buying books. I bought motivational tapes. Sales tapes. Marketing programs. Videos. Anything I could find to help me become better. I studied public speaking. I studied communication. I studied business. And perhaps most importantly, I learned how to think differently. Then something interesting happened. My income started going up. And every time my income went up, the amount I invested in myself did too. Over the years, those books, tapes, seminars, and courses probably returned my original investment a thousand times over. Because the knowledge didn't disappear when I spent it. It became part of me. It helped me build businesses, sell, speak, write books, market products and recognize opportunities I would never have seen before. I'm 63 now, and of all the business advice I've heard in my life, Brian Tracy's simple rule may still be the most valuable: Invest 3 to 5% of everything you earn in making yourself more valuable. Don't just upgrade your phone. Don't just upgrade your car. Upgrade the person earning the money. Because that may be the one investment you make that pays dividends for the rest of your life.
