David. 32. Manchester. I drove trams on the Metrolink. Early starts, late finishes, the same lines day after day. After tax and deductions I took home enough to cover rent, food, and the maintenance I pay every month for my son. Some months I was alright. Most months I was counting every pound. The divorce was messy. We don’t talk much now. I just make sure the money lands on time and that my boy knows I’m still here if he needs anything. That’s the part that matters. I lived in a basement flat in Moston. One small window. The kind that never gets proper light. It was quiet, cheap, and it was mine for now. My uncle Robert had a small farm about an hour outside the city, out towards Macclesfield. Nothing fancy. A few fields, a modest herd of cattle, an old farmhouse and a couple of barns. He never had kids of his own. We were close. I’d drive out there on my days off sometimes. He’d put the kettle on, show me what he was working on, and we’d talk about nothing important. He was the steady one in the family. He died suddenly. One week he was fine. The next week he was gone. In his will he left me the farm. I didn’t see it coming. I drove out there a few days later with a heavy feeling in my chest, not really knowing what I was supposed to do with it. The place was quiet. The house still smelled like him — wood smoke and tea. Everything was left exactly as it was. I started going through the rooms, trying to get a sense of what needed fixing and what it would cost. That’s when it hit me properly. The tractor was old. Some of the fencing needed work. The barn roof was tired. I didn’t have the money for any of it. Not with rent, not with the maintenance payments, not with what I was already stretching every month. In the small desk in the kitchen I found a folded piece of paper with my name on it. David, If you’re reading this, I’m not around anymore. I left you the farm because I know you’ll look after it the right way. There’s an app I was using called Royal Olympus.
