🏗 I BUILD OTHER PEOPLE’S HOUSES… AND ALMOST LOST MY OWN BECAUSE OF DEBTS My name is Ryan. I am 34. I am from the UK. I’m just a regular builder, a bricklayer. I’ve been doing this for about 9 years now, mostly self-employed through contractors. The money was alright — about £2.5k, sometimes £3k a month take-home with overtime. Recently my girlfriend and I decided to take a big step — we took a mortgage on a place. The old rent was already eating up half of the income, and it seemed better to pay for our own place. Plus the apartment was in terrible condition… we immediately understood — it needed renovation. We thought we’d manage in a couple of months… slowly, on our own. But then everything went downhill. Winter 2025/2026 was a nightmare. Rain non-stop. Sites were shutting down one after another. The main contractor I had been working with for the last 6 months delayed my pay for almost two months. Said “cashflow problems”. In construction that’s kinda “normal”… but when you have a mortgage and constant expenses — that’s not normal. It’s tough. And as if that wasn’t enough — additional costs on the apartment came up. Wiring. Damp in the walls. Mould. What we planned to do for £3–4k… ended up being almost £10k. Every month — mortgage payment. Plus materials. Plus bills. We started cutting back on everything. Food. Heating. It got that bad. Then my van completely finished me off. Clutch and gearbox — gone. Repair — £2,900. Without a van, you are no one. No foreman will take you if you can’t get to the site and bring your tools. I was losing money EVERY single day while it was sitting in the garage. At first I survived on a credit card and overdraft. Then I had to take out a proper loan. I thought: “I’ll fix the van, get back to work, and close everything quickly.” But no. Interest. New bills. The renovation was not ending. And everything just spiraled. Now the debt keeps growing. Debt collectors are already calling. And you sit there in
