My name's David. I'm 25 years old. I live in London. Peckham, to be exact. I came here for education. Studied business management at a university in East London. Got my degree. I thought it would open doors. I thought I'd get a good job, wear a suit, sit in an office, make my mum proud. That was three years ago. Now I work as a delivery rider. Uber Eats, Deliveroo, sometimes Just Eat when it's busy. I'm on my bike 10 hours a day, six days a week. My knees hurt. My back hurts. The rain doesn't care. The wind doesn't care. The customers don't care. I live alone in a tiny studio in Peckham. £950 a month. Shared bathroom with three other people on the same floor. The walls are paper-thin. I hear my neighbour snore at night. I hear his TV. I hear his arguments with his girlfriend. I can't afford to move. The student loan isn't going anywhere. The interest keeps growing. Every month, they take money from my payslip before I even see it. I've never made a payment that actually reduced the debt. Just interest. Always interest. I also owe £3,200 on a credit card. Took it out to buy a decent bike for deliveries. Then to fix the bike. Then to pay rent one month when I was sick and couldn't work. Debt collectors call every day. I don't answer anymore. They leave voicemails. "Mr. David, your account is overdue." "Mr. David, we need to discuss your outstanding balance." "Mr. David, if you don't pay, we will take legal action." I delete them without listening. I know what they say. I don't need to hear it again. My mum calls every Sunday. She asks: "David, have you found a good job yet? Your cousin is now a manager." I say: "Soon, Mum. I'm trying." I don't tell her about the bike. About the rain. About the debt collectors. About the nights I lie awake staring at the ceiling. She sent me here with hope. She told everyone: "My son is going to London to become somebody." Now I'm nobody. I sit in my tiny room at 1am, eating cold rice and beans, scrolling through job ads
