“Miss Gemma and Miss Sophie, you need £7,000 to adopt the child” I still remember that moment. The exact moment my life completely changed. My name is Gemma, I'm 25 years old, and I live in Norwich, in the Norwich Lanes area, with my girlfriend. Yes, that's right, my girlfriend. Her name is Sophie, and we've been together for about 5 years. Sophie and I met about 6 years ago, and since then we've been together every single day. We were born in the city of Lincoln, and 3 years ago we moved to Norwich to try and find ourselves anew. In our hometown, it was a bit difficult for us to live because of people's judgement—constant sideways glances and sometimes even people shouting after us... A couple of years after moving, we finally fully adapted and everything started looking up. I found a job as a waitress at a local pub, The Adam and Eve. And to be honest, I really love my job: loads of stories from strangers, an incredible atmosphere, and so many new acquaintances. At first, Sophie wasn't very lucky with finding a job; for a long time she drifted between different occupations searching for herself. During that period it was tough for us due to a lack of money, but eventually she got a job at a local animal shelter. Sophie and I rented a small, cosy flat for £1,300, and we spent about £600–£650 a month on food. Sophie really loves cooking unusual dishes and would definitely treat me to a delicious meal a couple of times a week. It wasn't a huge amount of money, but it was enough for us to live comfortably without loans or credit. We lived quite comfortably; we could afford to go on holiday somewhere, or go out for entertainment, concerts. Life finally seemed peaceful. And it went on like that until recently. One day, while Sophie and I were walking through the local streets, we saw a happy couple with a child. Sophie and I stopped to watch them; we stood and watched the sheer joy with which the child was playing with his father, heard the child's happy sho
