£3,000 Donation to an Animal Shelter My name is Gemma Radcliffe. I live with my husband Henry and our kids, Edward (12) and Eleanor (10). We live in London, in quite a pleasant area, Ealing. I work at the Mayhew animal home in my local area. We have so many different animals, whom I love to bits. I have been working here for 8 years and I’ve seen all sorts. Animals being adopted into families. Animals being given up, for various reasons. People quite often bring pet food, some a single pack, some two. People often pop in to feed the animals themselves; the kids especially love this. We have our regular visitors, and even some who have already adopted a pet and come back with them to feed the others. One of them was a man of about 30, named Charlie. A few months ago, he adopted a Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy—quite an unusual choice, as they aren't the easiest breed, but they are gentle souls. Charlie comes to the shelter with his pup 2–3 times a month to feed the dogs and bring some food or something else. These are mostly small gifts, but we are always glad to receive even the smallest chew bone. However, this visit left me stunned. He came in as usual, only he was wearing an interesting T-shirt with some fisherman on it and the words Big Bass Bonanza. Charlie said hello, told us he had brought a little gift for us, and told the people outside to bring it in. It was a van full of pet food—dozens of sacks of food, dry, wet, all kinds of pet treats, as well as basic vitamins. They were unloading it for about 10 minutes while I just stood there with my jaw on the floor. I was in absolute shock and didn't know what to say. No one had ever brought that much food, and our own reserves hold significantly less. Once I got my breath back, I asked where all this food had come from and why so much, as it must have cost a fortune! Smiling, the man simply said he really wanted to do something lovely for our shelter; we are always welcoming to guests, ask for nothin
