"A small favour for my passenger brought me £87,670" My name is Daniel, I’m 54, from York, and I’ve been working as a train driver for almost 30 years. To be honest, it wasn’t really my ultimate goal in life, but let’s start from the beginning. All through my childhood and youth, I was obsessed with machinery. I was constantly reading newspapers, and from about the age of 12, my room started piling up with The Railway Magazine, Air Pictorial, Autocar, and Motor. I was completely hooked. On weekends, my friends and I loved running over to the local National Railway Museum — I think I knew absolutely everything about trains. But by the time I was 15, I happened to visit the York Gliding Centre with my uncle, who was a pilot. That day, I even got to fly in a glider with him (if you don't know, it’s an aircraft without an engine that flies on air currents). After that, I completely forgot about trains. My new goal was to become a pilot. I re-read every aviation book in the local library, learnt everything there was to know about planes, and was certain that after school I’d go to flight school. To my great disappointment, it wasn't meant to be. When I was finishing school, my parents couldn't afford to pay for my pilot training. I don't blame them at all — they always did everything they could for me; it was just how things turned out. Knowing my old passion for trains, my parents suggested I train to become a engine driver instead. I might not have wanted it that much anymore, but I realised I didn't have much choice and had to go for it. After eighteen months of training, I got onto the so-called "line of promotion". I started driving trains, though not on my own yet — I was accompanied by instructors and senior drivers. Five years later, I became a fully qualified, independent mainline train driver.
