💔 For four years I worked every single day. And still ended up with almost nothing. Here’s what happened next. My name’s Jack Collins. I’m 31. I live in Manchester. Before you read the rest, I’ll say this — I’m not someone who normally writes long posts online. I’ve always kept things to myself. Everyone’s got their own problems and I never liked complaining. But a couple of people I told this story to said the same thing: “You should write it. Someone out there might need to hear it.” So here it is. Who I am I grew up in Salford, just outside Manchester. My dad drove buses for most of his life. Early mornings, late shifts, never complained. My mum worked part-time in a bakery near Eccles. Nothing fancy — just a normal working family. I didn’t go to university. Most of my mates didn’t either. At 18 I worked in a warehouse. Then retail. Tried a few different jobs. Nothing stuck. About four years ago I started doing deliveries. Deliveroo, Uber Eats — whatever paid. At first it seemed like a good idea. Flexible hours. No boss breathing down your neck. Work as much as you want. And if you really pushed yourself, you could make £2,000–£2,300 a month. Not amazing money, but enough to get by. Or at least… that’s what I thought. What my month actually looked like After expenses, my take-home was usually around £2,200. Then the bills started stacking up. Rent — £1,020 Council tax — £165 Fuel — about £420 a month Car insurance — £182 Phone — £35 Food — tried to keep it around £200 That’s already most of it gone. And that doesn’t include car repairs, tyres, MOT, or anything unexpected. Some months I’d open my banking app and see £120 left. Sometimes less. And that’s after working 10–12 hours a day. When things started falling apart The job depends on one thing. Your car. If the car stops — you stop. One evening in February, after a long day of deliveries, I noticed a strange noise when shifting gears. Next morning I took it to the garage. Gear
