For three years I did everything right. And still ended up with nothing. Here’s what happened next. My name’s Oliver Hughes. I’m 34. I’m from Leeds. Before you keep reading — I want to say one thing. I’m not the kind of person who writes posts like this. I’ve never shared personal stuff online. Always thought it wasn’t my place. Everyone’s got their own problems. But a few people I told this story to in person said: “Write it. It might help someone.” So… here it is. First — who I am I grew up in Leeds. My dad worked in textiles in Morley his whole life, right up until it shut down. My mum worked in a school kitchen in Beeston. Just a normal West Yorkshire family. Not poor, not rich. Just people who work, pay their bills, and get on with it. I didn’t go to university. Not because I couldn’t — I just didn’t see the point in taking on £50k of debt for a piece of paper. I went straight to work. At 19 — warehouse labourer. At 22 — machine operator in Wakefield. By 27 — senior shift operator. Stable job, decent pay, predictable routine. I’ve never been reckless with money. Never went to Magaluf every summer with the lads. Never financed a new phone every year. Rented a flat in Beeston — quiet area, not central, but fine. £860 a month. Drove a 2015 Honda Civic. Cooked at home. Went to the pub maybe once every couple of weeks. Lived modestly. But I thought I was doing alright. Or at least — I thought I was. What my month looked like on paper Take-home pay — about £2,240. Rent — £860. Council tax — £158. Electricity and gas — up to £195 in winter, around £85 in summer. Ever since the Eon Next bills started climbing, every email from them made me a bit uneasy. Fuel — about £115 a month. Car insurance — £79. Groceries — tried to keep it at £175, rarely managed. Phone — £25. Internet — £35. Laptop finance — £21 a month. All in — roughly £1,800–£1,870 just for the basics. Leftover — £300–£400. If nothing unexpected happened. But something always did. March — ca
