I was born and raised in the United Kingdom, in the Croydon area in South London. My family was very ordinary. My mum worked in a pharmacy, and my father was an electrician. We never lived in luxury, but we never critically lacked anything either. In our home there was always one simple principle: if you want to achieve something — you need to learn to understand people and yourself. That is probably why I chose the profession of a psychologist. As a teenager I was always amazed at how differently people react to the same events. One person breaks after difficulties, while another — on the contrary — becomes stronger. I wanted to understand why the human mind works exactly this way. After school I enrolled at Kingston University London, where I studied behavioural psychology. Later I completed my master’s degree and began working in private practice. I have now been working as a psychologist for eight years. During that time hundreds of people have passed through my office. Some came with anxiety, some with depression, others with relationship problems. Over time I learned to read people quite quickly. Sometimes the first five minutes of conversation are enough to understand what kind of person is sitting in front of you. But one client completely changed my understanding of how human motivation and gambling behaviour work. First session He came to see me on an ordinary Tuesday. He was about 30 years old. At first glance he did not look like a person with serious problems. Neat clothes, a calm manner of speaking, confident posture. But his eyes revealed something different. They were the eyes of someone who had experienced far too much. He told me that he had grown up in a disadvantaged area of East London.
