THREE YEARS DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT. AND STILL LOST EVERYTHING. 💔 Before I go on — let me make one thing clear. I'm not the type who posts personal stuff online. Never was. I always thought everyone carries their own load alone. But three people I told this to all said the same thing: "Marcus, write it down. Maybe it'll help someone." So here goes. Who I am My name is Marcus. I'm 41. I'm from the West Midlands — originally Coventry, but now I live just outside Birmingham. Think old factory towns, red brick, roundabouts, and a hell of a lot of rain. I've worked at DHL for sixteen years. Sorting centre, then driver, then back to sorting. Night shifts, early shifts, Christmas shifts. Parcels, boxes, addresses nobody can find. Ten thousand steps before lunch. Back hurts. Knees hurt. But you get up and you go. And you know what? I actually liked the job. Honest. Simple work. Move it from A to B. Done. My old man worked at the car plant in Coventry until it shut down. Not one complaint. Ever. My grandad was a miner in Warwickshire. Didn't complain either. In our family, that's just not how it works. You graft. You keep your head down. End of. I lived in a small two-bed flat in Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham. Nothing special, but it was mine. Rent: £780 a month. My daughter Emily — she's 9 — lives with her mum in Coventry city centre. I see her every weekend. Never missed a child maintenance payment. No car. DHL van during the day, bus or bike in the evening. That bit's important — you'll see why in a minute. I cooked for myself. No takeaways. Aldi, Lidl — whatever was cheapest. Never really had proper weekends — shifts were all over the place. Sometimes four on, two off. Sometimes six on, one off. On paper, I was getting by. The numbers per month Take-home — about £2,380 a month (with night shift allowance). Rent — £780 Bills (electric, gas, council tax) — £210 in winter, £90 in summer Food — £260 Child maintenance for Emily — £410 Phone & internet — £55 B
