🛑 There was only €70 left in my bank account. That night changed everything. My name is Cillian. I'm 34 years old. I was born and raised in Ireland, and I live in Cork. Not the Ireland you see on tourist postcards — not Dublin with its historic pubs and crowds around Temple Bar. The real Ireland: rainy mornings, aging housing estates, packed buses, endless traffic jams, and Atlantic winds that cut right through you in winter. I worked as a fiber optic network technician for a telecommunications company. I installed FTTH connections across County Cork and surrounding areas. After taxes, I earned between €3,200 and €3,600 a month. I lived in a small rented apartment on the outskirts of the city. Rent was €1,350 per month. Utilities and internet added another €250. Fuel for my old Volkswagen Golf, insurance, and other expenses constantly ate through whatever money I had left. At the end of every month, I was barely getting by. One month the car would break down, the next month electricity bills would spike, and sometimes I had to help my mother, who lived in Galway. The End September 2025. The company started cutting staff. I was laid off. On my last day, I handed back the company van, my work jacket, and my ID card. Then I sat in my old Volkswagen Golf in the parking lot outside the office and stared at the grey sky. I called my mother. "Mam, I lost my job." "Stay strong, love... things will get better." Rock Bottom October 2025. I applied for unemployment support. While the paperwork was being processed, the rent still had to be paid. I found work as a security guard at a large business centre in Cork. Night shifts, three or four times a week. After taxes, I made around €2,200 a month. Every evening I took the bus to work, put on an uncomfortable uniform, switched on my radio, and stood at the entrance.
