I was cleaning out the cabinet under my bathroom sink, the deep one, the one that becomes a graveyard for everything you bought with hope and abandoned with disappointment. And I started pulling things out, and I couldn't stop. A detox tea, two thirds full, the box crushed at the corner. A bottle of dandelion root capsules, the "natural diuretic" a wellness account swore by, maybe ten taken out of sixty. A bloating supplement with a name like a startup, the kind with the minimalist label, half gone. A second detox tea, different brand, because the first one didn't work so obviously the problem was the brand and not the entire concept. A jade roller. A gua sha stone. A little vibrating face thing I genuinely forgot I owned. Apple cider vinegar gummies. Of course there were apple cider vinegar gummies. I lined them all up on the bathroom floor and just looked at them for a minute. And then, because I'm a little bit unwell, I added it up in my head. The teas, the capsules, the gummies, the tools, the "drainage" drops that did nothing. It was over four hundred dollars. Four hundred dollars of things I'd bought specifically to fix the same problem, lined up on my bathroom floor, every single one of them a small monument to a morning I'd woken up bloated and thought maybe this is the thing. None of them were the thing. I want to be honest about something, because it's the part that actually matters. I'm not stupid. I want to say that plainly because that's exactly how a cabinet like that makes you feel. Like you got suckered, over and over, by the same trick in different packaging. But I wasn't being stupid. I was being hopeful. Which is a different thing. And the products were counting on the hope. And the reason none of them worked wasn't that I picked the wrong ones.
