I shouldn't be writing this. But I can't keep it in any longer. Before you keep going — just so you understand properly: I'm not the type who puts their life on display. Never have been. I'm the type who stays quiet. Grits her teeth. Smiles when she wants to scream. Twenty-three years I've managed on my own. No complaints. No posts. No "feel sorry for me." But three people I told this to in person — when I literally couldn't breathe anymore — all said the same thing: "Melodie, write it down. Other girls think they're alone in this kind of shit. They're not." So here it is. One time. No dressing it up. Who I am. My name's Melodie. I'm twenty-three. Grew up in a small town up north. The kind of place where the factory shut down years ago and half the shops on the high street are boarded up. I live in Brighton now. But between "back then" and "now" there was London. And there was a man who broke me so badly I'm still putting myself back together. Mum. Old spinal injury. Fell years ago. NHS covers the basics — painkillers and maybe some physio if you're willing to wait six months. But the surgery she actually needs? The specialist in London? Not fully covered. Private clinic. Twenty-five thousand quid. We never had that kind of money. Not even close. I moved to London with one thought: I'm gonna make it. I'll earn it. I'll help her. I'll save her. London chewed me up and spit me out. A bar in Shoreditch. "The Broken Whistle." Ten hours on my feet. Floor sticky from spilled beer and god knows what. Manager fines you if a table waits too long. Drunk City boys grabbing my waist. Old regulars grabbing my arse. I dodge. I smile. I keep my mouth shut. Tips help a bit. Barely. Flat in Croydon. Tiny one-bedroom. Nine hundred quid a month. Mould in the bathroom. Radiators that make noise all night. Window looks out on a car park. Never any proper sunlight. Every month I send Mum two hundred quid. I scrape it from groceries, from my Oyster card, from everything. She never asks. B
