My life changed in 11 days 🤯🤯 To be honest, I'm still not sure if I'm doing the right thing by posting this. Laura and I have been talking for nearly a month about whether to put our story online or not. In the end we thought: «Fuck it, we're not the only young family going through this.» So here it goes. My name is Carlos Garcia. I'm 31 years old. Every day I used to get up at 5:45am, grab a coffee at the café downstairs in Salford (Greater Manchester), and get into my Tesco van. I'd do deliveries all across Greater Manchester: Stockport, Oldham, Bolton, Wigan, Sale… Tailbacks on the M60, broken lifts, old ladies shouting about out-of-date yoghurt, and Laura — my girl — who was a shift manager at the Tesco I delivered to. She was the first one to shout at me over the radio if I was 15 minutes late. The situation The pay was £1450–1650 in a good month. Laura worked too, but basically I was carrying us both. We rented a small two-bedroom flat — £950 a month rent. Food, petrol, fags, helping my parents down in Norwich… At the end of the month, we had £150–200 left at most. Everyone knows what rents are like in England — they take 50% or more of your wage just on that. But yeah, we were getting by. Living modestly but with dignity. Then everything falls apart And then it all went to shit. Laura got pregnant. At first we were buzzing with happiness. But two months later, the landlord put the rent up by another £100. My van broke down — £750 for repairs. The bills kept going up and up. What used to be tight suddenly became a disaster. I went into the red. First I borrowed from mates, then from my parents. The worst day And then came the worst day of my life. In the evening, the landlord knocked on the door. I opened it in my dressing gown — Laura was behind me, her bump already showing. He didn't even say hello. Just: «If you don't pay everything by Friday, I'm evicting you. Pack your stuff.» I went quiet. Words wouldn't come out. Neighbo
