Marcus

🔴 I just delivered my last Deliveroo order ever. In a BMW. And I tipped the customer £40. She opened the door holding a £24 food order, saw a guy in a Deliveroo jacket standing next to a white BMW 3 Series, and her face did that thing where the brain can't process what the eyes are seeing. "Is that... yours?" "Since this morning, yeah." "You deliver food in a BMW?" "Only on my last day." She laughed. I laughed. Her boyfriend came to the door and didn't laugh because he drives a Civic. Let me rewind before the comments turn into a conspiracy thread. --- I'm 27. London. Croydon, specifically. If you know, you know. If you don't — it means overpriced house shares, buses that don't come, and the kind of grey in January that makes your soul die before your phone does. I've been doing Deliveroo and Just Eat for two years. Full time. On a bike. A £200 Halfords bike with a basket zip-tied to the front that I'm genuinely embarrassed to lock up next to someone's £2,500 e-bike. In summer — it's fine. You sweat, you ride, you deliver. The tips are okay. You can pull £120-150 on a good day. In winter — it's survival. Minus 18. Black ice. Your fingers stop working after 20 minutes. Your phone dies. The thermal bag keeps the food warm but nobody invented a thermal bag for a human being. I've delivered pad thai in a freezing rain. The pad thai arrived hot. I arrived hypothermic. Average month: £2,200-2,600. Sounds decent until you see the math. Room rent (house share, Croydon): £780 Phone + data: £35 Bike maintenance: £30 Food: £250 (I eat the orders that get cancelled. Don't judge me. Everyone does it) Oyster for days I can't bike: £50 Clothes/gear: £20 Misc: £40 Left: ~£800-1,200. That £800 is "savings." Except every month something eats it. New tire. Phone screen repair. The time I hit a pothole on Old Kent Road and bent my front wheel — £120, gone. No benefits. No sick days. No pension. No career. No plan. Just me, a bike, a thermal bag, and a ping on my phone
