5 YEARS ON THE ROAD — AND IT'S STILL THE SAME My name is Florin, I'm 34 years old. I'm from Cluj-Napoca, but I've been living in the United Kingdom for 5 years now. Back in Romania, I borrowed money, bought an old truck, and drove off in it looking for a better life. Now I'm a truck driver. I travel all over the UK — mostly long-haul, sometimes 12–14 hours behind the wheel. Every single day looks the same: 03:30 — wake up in the cab or in a cheap Travelodge 04:30 — loading at the warehouse 05:30–21:00 — on the road M25, M6, M1 — endless traffic jams rain, fog, wind detours, roadworks clients yelling that you're "10 minutes late" parking spots with no showers, sleeping in the cab constant smell of diesel and energy drinks In the evening my back, neck, shoulders, wrists hurt — my whole body. My legs swell from the pedals. I dreamed of a new life… and ended up in another trap. Salary: £2200–£2600 per month. After taxes and fuel, it's £1700–£1900 net. Part of it goes to rent a room in Middlesbrough (when I'm home). The rest — fuel for my personal car, food, council tax, phone bills, speeding fines. Savings — zero. Debts — only growing.
