I moved to London chasing a dream. But instead, all I found was debt, loneliness, and about forty quid left in my bank account. My name’s Olivia Williams. I’m 32. A year and a half ago, I packed up and left Lincoln—where I’d lived practically my whole life—to finally give London a proper go. I still remember the day I got here like it was yesterday. Dragging this massive, bloody heavy suitcase out of King’s Cross station, freezing for a second just looking around at the sheer madness of it all. Double-decker buses everywhere, towering blocks, endless noise… It couldn’t have been further from the quiet life back home in Lincoln. In that exact moment, I genuinely thought my real life was kicking off. Before I left, everyone and their mum kept telling me oh you’re so lucky Liv, London’s full of opportunities. And god, I bought right into it. I sold off half my things, wiped out my tiny savings, and even borrowed a bit of cash off my auntie. I promised her that within twelve months I’d have a solid job, my own place, and wouldn't need a single penny from anyone. For the first few weeks, my Insta looked class with Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Hyde Park, lovely golden sunsets over the Thames. From the outside looked like I was absolutely living my best life. Nobody saw the actual reality of it. In truth, I was renting this microscopic box room in a run-down house share in Peckham. It was so cramped my clothes airer literally touched the edge of the bed. Winter hit, and the place was freezing, damp, and the boiler packed in every five minutes. At first, I kept telling myself it’s just temporary and things will sort themselves out soon. Except they didn't. Spent nearly two months hunting for work. Some days I’d clock over 20,000 steps, sprinting from one interview across central London straight to another. I’d get back late, completely shattered, feet throbbing, just to get another bloody rejection email saying you don’t have enough local experience or we’ll be in touch
