My name is James Walker, I’m 28 years old. I live in Manchester. My life started more or less normally, but it quickly went wrong. My relationship with my parents was always tense. It was always the same thing: — “When are you finally going to get your act together?” At some point I just left. No arguments. I packed my things and moved out. I rented a room in a shared house. The neighbours changed every couple of months: someone was making noise late at night, someone was drinking, someone wouldn’t even say hello. But I didn’t really have a choice. I got a job as a delivery driver — delivering parcels around the city. All day behind the wheel: traffic jams, sat nav, entrances, stairs, heavy packages. The work was hard, but the pay was stable. I lived by a simple routine: work → takeaway food → YouTube → sleep. And so it went every day. After some time I bought a car on finance. Without it, it would have been almost impossible to work. An ordinary Ford Fiesta — not new, but quite decent. The monthly payment came to about £260. At first everything was fine. I paid on time, worked, and even managed to save a little. But then the problems started. The car began to break down. First small issues, then more serious ones. Repair, then another repair, then another one. The money started disappearing very quickly. One month I didn’t manage to make the payment on time. Then I missed the second one. I thought: “It’s no big deal, I’ll pay it a bit later.” But there it worked differently. Interest, fines, penalties — the debt grew like a snowball.
