Now she’s about 1.5 years old. She already says “mama,” “no,” “up” (asking to be picked up), babbles, and her face lights up when she sees me. But the pain of reality hits even harder now that she’s right here with me and sees how exhausted I am every single day. The NMC registration process takes years: NNAS assessment, CELPIP/IELTS, jurisprudence exam, OSCE, bridging programme. All of it costs thousands of pounds (NNAS ~£650, exams £200–£1,000 each, bridging programmes £3,000–£10,000+), plus preparatory courses and wait times of 2–4 years (sometimes longer). While you wait — you still have to survive. I work as a Healthcare Assistant (PSW) in a care home. Elderly care: feeding, bathing, changing diapers, cleaning rooms, bathrooms, and floors. 10–12 hour shifts, often doubles. Pay: £11–£14 per hour, roughly £1,800–£2,200 per month after tax and National Insurance. Rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Croydon: £1,200–£1,500 per month (so Emma has space for her crib and toys).
