I had just £55 left, a £3,100 van repair bill, and debt collectors calling me every single day. That was the night everything changed. My name is Jack Thornton. I’m 34 years old. I’m from the UK. I’m just an ordinary builder, a bricklayer. I’ve been doing it for about 9 years now, mostly self-employed through contractors. The money was decent — around £2,600, sometimes up to £3,200 a month take-home with overtime. My girlfriend had cut back her hours at work for a while, so most of the financial pressure fell on me. We thought we could hold on for a couple of months… until things got back to normal. But then everything went wrong. The winter of 2025/2026 was a nightmare. It rained non-stop. Construction sites were shutting down one after another. The main contractor I’d been working with for the past six months delayed my payment for nearly two months. They said it was “cashflow problems”. In construction, that’s kind of “normal”… but when the rent, bills, and everything else still have to be paid on time — it’s brutal. And as if that wasn’t enough, the landlord increased the rent by another £175 a month. We started cutting back on absolutely everything. Food. Heating. Even the most basic things in the flat. It got really bad. Then my van completely finished me off. The clutch and gearbox were gone. Repair cost — £3,100. Without a van in this job, you’re nobody. No foreman will take you if you can’t get to the site and bring your tools. I was losing money every single day while it sat in the garage. At first, I survived on a credit card and overdraft. Then I had to take out a proper loan. I thought: “Fix the van, get back to work, and pay it off quickly.” But it didn’t work out that way. Interest. New bills. Unexpected costs. Everything just spiralled out of control. Now the debt kept growing. Debt collectors were already calling non-stop. And you sit there in the evening… looking around the flat… thinking: “How did I even end up here?” One night
