“Mrs Morgan, you have 72 hours.” I remember the exact moment when my life completely fell apart. My name is Sally Morgan. I’m 37 years old. I live in London, in Croydon, with my husband Hugo and our two kids — Lily, who is 9, and Leo, who is 6. Ten years ago, Hugo and I moved to London from Bristol. We arrived with two suitcases and the belief that somehow everything would work out. At first, we took whatever work we could find: cleaning, warehouse shifts, odd delivery jobs. Anything to get ourselves on our feet. After three years, we finally settled down. I got a job as an administrator at a private clinic, and Hugo became a delivery driver. We had a good, stable life. Then, 7 years ago, we decided to buy a flat. A small two-bedroom flat in Croydon for £185,000. The deposit was small, so the monthly mortgage payment came to around £850. It was tight, but we managed. That’s how we lived. Until the summer of 2025. In June, the clinic announced redundancies. I was one of those who were let go. I started looking for work straight away, but it turned out that the job market in London was absolutely terrible. Everywhere wanted specialised medical qualifications or younger candidates willing to work for minimum wage. I went to countless interviews, but every single time they chose someone else. At the last one, they told me, “We’ll give you a call.” I knew exactly what that meant. Hugo grabbed every extra shift he could, taking additional routes and night shifts. But even that wasn’t enough to cover the cost of living in London. The missed payments started piling up. One month. Three months. Eight months. The bank called every single day. Then the registered letters started arriving. And finally came the final warning. Total debt: **£34,200.** If I didn’t settle it by the deadline, repossession proceedings and eviction would begin. And then came those words: **72 hours.** I was standing in the kitchen, my hands literally shaking as I held the phone. Hugo
