Then there’s the bills — £280, rent — £1,450, the car, fuel, groceries, loans… Basically, every month I was barely keeping my head above water. Then more problems started piling up. First, our work van’s clutch and gearbox failed. The repair cost £6,300. We split the cost between the lads — my share was £1,050. I had to borrow the money. Then I got a message from our landlord: “You need to move out, I’m selling the property.” We had lived in that flat for 9 years, and both of our sons were born there. It was a huge shock for us. Moving is always expensive. A new place of the same size now costs £1,700–£1,800 a month. Plus the first and last month’s rent and the estate agent’s fee. In the end, it was £4,250 out of nowhere.
