I’ve been a single dad for the past two years, and somehow I’ve finally managed to move my family into a new home. Hi everyone, my name is Darren Vella and I’m from Birkirkara. The smiles you can see in the photo are my kids after we moved into our new place. It still feels strange even saying that, especially when I think about the flat we were living in before. I’m a single father of three. I have one son, Jake, and two daughters, Maya and Elisa. And just to be clear, I’m definitely not rich. I work as a warehouse operator at Farsons. It’s a decent job and I’m grateful for it, but after groceries, bills and the usual everyday expenses, there’s never really much left at the end of the month. So I suppose the obvious question is how did I manage to move us into a new home? To explain that, I need to tell you a bit about how we were living before. We had a normal two-bedroom flat, but there always seemed to be something wrong with it. My son and I shared one bedroom and the girls shared the other. Whenever the weather was bad, the ceiling would leak. There was always something that needed fixing, but I simply didn’t have the money to keep repairing everything. We didn’t even have a washing machine or a dishwasher, so most things had to be done by hand. The children hardly had any room to play. The hardest part for me was when they wanted something and I had to tell them no. I’m not talking about expensive things either. Sometimes it was something really simple, but even that could be too much for me at the time. I can’t explain how horrible it feels as a father when your children ask for something and you know you can’t afford it. Things between me and my wife didn’t work out. It’s a long and complicated story. To keep it short, she was declared mentally unwell after trying to harm herself, and eventually the court gave me full custody of the children.
