Mum doesn’t know I found a folded clinic slip in her bag. Last night £24,800 landed in Barclays 💔 still can’t believe it My name is Charlotte Harris. I’m 36 and I live in Bestwood, Nottingham. I raise my daughter on my own. She’s nine. Most of the week is ordinary. School, work, dinner, bed. The thing that wasn’t ordinary is my mum. She lives in Derby. She’s 64. Last year she damaged her knee badly. The doctors said she needs an operation. The NHS put her on a waiting list and told her December. It’s September now. Every time I asked, she said the same thing: don’t fuss, I’m fine. She still put washing out. She still made tea. Then she’d hold the doorframe when she thought I wasn’t looking. Last Sunday she left me a voicemail at 7am and then texted “ignore that, I’m fine”. That’s what she does after a bad night. I went over. She talked about everything except her knee. I went into the hall to get her coat and looked for her bus pass. It wasn’t in the usual pocket. Behind her cards there was a piece of paper folded into a small square. It was from a private clinic in Derby. A surgery slot. £2,400. The date on it had already passed. She’d put a deposit down and then let the rest go, so I wouldn’t see it on her account. I folded it back the way I found it and went into the kitchen. She was making toast. My daughter was in the other room watching telly. On the way home I opened Barclays. There wasn’t enough in there to do anything about that piece of paper. On Monday the clinic emailed her. A cancellation had come up for Tuesday afternoon if it was paid by 6pm that day. She forwarded it to me by accident and then wrote “take no notice”. I was going to ignore it. I ignore most things like that. On the bus home I was just scrolling Facebook. Hannah came up. We were close at school. We haven’t spoken in years. Her photos look like another life. House, holidays, none of the counting I do at 11pm. I sat there for a bit and then I wrote to her. I felt stupid doin
