Facebook is an American social media and social networking service company owned by the American tech giant Meta. It was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and four Harvard University students and roommates—Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes—and its name is derived from Facebook, a popular contact list among American college students. Initially, Facebook membership was limited to Harvard University students, but it was later expanded to other North American universities. Since 2006, Facebook has allowed users aged 13 and older to register, except in a few countries where the age requirement is 14. [6] As of December 2023, Facebook claimed nearly 3.07 billion monthly active users worldwide. [7] As of July 2025, Facebook was the third most visited website globally, with 23% of its traffic coming from the United States. [8] It was the most downloaded mobile app of the 2010s. [9] Users can access Facebook via internet-connected devices such as personal computers, tablets, and smartphones. After registering, users can create profiles to display their personal information. They can post text, photos, and multimedia content that can be shared with other users who have agreed to be friends, or shared publicly depending on different privacy settings. Users can also use Messenger to communicate directly with each other, edit messages (which can be edited within 15 minutes of being sent) [10][11], join groups with shared interests, and receive dynamic notifications from Facebook friends and their followed pages.
