By the 5th the account’s empty. £12 left until payday. Two months ago a recorded letter from court. Bank debt £3,740. Took it to plug holes. Next step was wages taken or the HSBC account frozen. Tuesday. Lucas comes in from school with a flyer. — Dad, the lads in class are joining swimming. £55. Can I go? I look at him. I look at the £12. I tell him not this month. He goes: “Don’t worry about it. I didn’t even want to.” Eight years old and he’s already covering for his dad. Next day, Tesco. Food for the evening. Till says £14.20. Card: declined. I was £2 short. People behind sighing. Someone tells me to get a move on. I say sorry, leave the bag on the belt, walk out. Sit on the bench by the door for a minute. Not a scene. Typed the account number wrong three times. 2:21. HSBC: incoming £1,080.00. Sat in the kitchen staring at the table. No speech. After that I only opened it when Lucas was asleep. Week later another hit — £5,520. First thing I did was clear the debt: £3,740. Yesterday the letter came. Case closed.
