Hi, I'm Anna. I'm 31. I live in Manchester, in Chorlton. I don't rent a flat – just a room in an old house with three random blokes. Nine square metres. Bed, wardrobe and a desk with an old 2017 laptop that takes five minutes to boot up. I've been working as a cashier at Tesco Express since 2020. Evening shifts – 2pm till 10pm, sometimes 11pm if someone doesn't show up. £11.44 an hour. After tax, that's about £1,500 a month. Sounds alright on paper, right? In reality – constant stress, living paycheck to paycheck. Every month it's the same depressing maths that makes me feel sick: Room – £550 (bills included except internet) Council tax – £90 (the others are always late paying, so I cover it) Internet + phone – £55 Bus fare – £65 (night buses are even more expensive, and I'm always getting home late) Food – £250 (I haven't eaten meat in ages – just rice, pasta, veg and cheap bread. Sometimes I'm so tired I forget to eat) Medicine – £10 (painkillers and allergy tablets – my head hurts almost every day) Subscriptions, charity shop clothes, bits and bobs – another £100–120 At the end of it, I've got about £400 left. And that £400 has to cover anything that crops up. Because something always does. I've been single for three years now, since me and Dan split. He didn't hit me or shout at me. He just stopped noticing me. I became part of the furniture. I'd wake up next to someone who didn't even acknowledge me. So I left. And since then – complete silence. I get home around half ten. The door creaks, the lads are shouting and blasting music at 2am. I lie in my room and I'm scared to even knock on the wall. Scared they'll tell me to move out. Because I've got nowhere else to go. Every night's the same: I take off my Tesco uniform (the blue fleece and black trousers that have gone baggy at the knees), put the kettle on, make a cup of tea without sugar and just stare at the wall. I think about how I'm 31 and I've got zero savings. If my laptop breaks – I'm don
