I don't want to be rich. I just want my kids not to be scared to ask for things. My name's Paul Butler, I'm 41. I'm from Leicester. For the last 6 years, I've been working as a warehouse stocker at Tesco Superstore. Every morning at 5:15am, I'm already at the staff entrance, waiting for them to open the warehouse. From 5:30am, the nightmare begins. My job is unloading pallets from lorries, stacking shelves, moving crates of water, milk, tinned drinks, bags of rice and sugar. 300–400 heavy lifts per shift. Squats, bends, pushing heavy cages. By lunchtime, my back is already on fire, my knees are swollen, and my hands start shaking. I'm not complaining. I get that it's physical work. But when you do it day in, day out, year after year — your body just starts giving up. I took out a loan a while back. Two years ago, when Sarah lost her job due to redundancies, we really needed the money. We borrowed £9,500 to fix the car (which was always breaking down) and just to keep our heads above water. Then another £4,000 – when Olivia needed braces. And then another loan – for new bedroom furniture for the kids, because the old stuff was falling apart. Right now, my total debt is £14,800. Monthly repayment – £380. And that's on a take-home pay of £2,050–£2,180 after deductions. Rent on our two-bed flat in Leicester – £825. Bills in winter – £220–£250. Food, transport, school dinners, clothes for the kids – by the end of the month, we're often in the red. The hardest part is looking at the kids. Olivia's 9. She works really hard at school and does dancing. Recently she asked for new dance trainers. I saw the price – £65. And I said: "Maybe next month, love…" She just nodded and went to her room. I stood in the hallway feeling like a complete failure. Lucas is 6. He's always asking to go to McDonald's or to buy a new Hot Wheels car. I'm constantly having to say no. Last winter was especially tough. The kids went down with the flu one after another. Prescriptions, cough
