Smell, burnt, fragrant, and fishy and rotten. These are the five odors that the nose can smell. Gourd, clay, leather, wood, stone, and metal. Silk and bamboo are the eight sounds. They are the four tones: level, rising, departing, and entering. These four tones should be harmonious. Great-great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and oneself. Oneself, son, and grandson. From son and grandson to great-great-grandson. These are the nine generations, the human relationships. Father and son are kind, husband and wife are obedient. Elder brothers are friendly, younger brothers are respectful. There is order between elder and younger, friends and companions. The ruler is respected, the subject is loyal. These ten virtues are common to all. When you learn from your teacher, do not disobey them. Wear mourning clothes, and observe the mourning rites for all ranks. At the end of the mourning period, the five mourning grades are completed. Rites, music, archery, charioteering, calligraphy, and mathematics are taught. The ancient Six Arts are no longer complete. Only calligraphy is universally followed. After recognizing characters, one learns the *Shuowen Jiezi* (a dictionary of Chinese characters). There are ancient scripts, large and small seal scripts. Clerical and cursive scripts follow, and should not be confused. Extensive learning is daunting; a brief explanation is sufficient to understand the origins. All instruction for children must be meticulous. Explain the meanings and punctuation clearly. Every scholar must have a beginning. After elementary education, one proceeds to the Four Books.
