My name's Ryan. I'm 35. I live in Bolton, not far from Manchester. Not in the centre like, just a normal area where the houses are old an' in the mornin' you can still sometimes smell smoke from the factory chimneys. Every weekday at 5:45am I get in my old Vauxhall Astra 2008 an' drive to the furniture factory on the outskirts. I've been workin' as a sander for six years now. Not the bloke who does the nice finishin' on cabinets for photos on websites. Nah. I stand at the machine with an orbital sander an' take off layer after layer from MDF fronts an' carcasses for cheap kitchens an' bedrooms that end up in the big chains. Shift's usually 10–11 hours. Sometimes 12 if the order's urgent. The noise is that loud, even with earplugs your ears are ringin' by the end of the day. The machines are howlin', the pneumatics are hissin', somewhere in the distance a circular saw's screamin'. An' the dust… the dust's fuckin' everywhere. Wood dust, fine like flour. Flies in your face, gets in your hair, under your collar, in your pockets. By dinner time your teeth are already grindin' on it, even when you're drinkin' tea from your flask. Mask? Tried FFP3 an' the normal ones. After a couple of hours it's wet from sweat an' the dust still gets through. By the evenin' it feels like you ain't breathin' air, you're breathin' this grey fog.The smell in the workshop's its own thing: a mix of fresh wood, PVA glue, thinners an' some chemicals from the varnishes. After shift you go outside — feels like fresh air, but after five minutes you realise it's still on you. Get home, have a shower — you wash off what you can see. But the smell of wood an' chemicals stays in your nose, in your hair, even in the towel. The missus says she can still smell it sometimes when I get into bed. My hands — that's a whole different story. The skin's rough like sandpaper, full of little cracks an' cuts. Splinters are normal, some of 'em go so deep you can't get 'em out straight away. After hot water
