🛑 My name is Favour. I'm 31. I live in London, in Woolwich. Not the nice part near the river. The part behind the DLR station, past the pound shops and the betting shops, where the rent is cheaper because nobody chooses to live here. You end up here. I rent a room in a house with three other people. All of us from somewhere else. All of us sending money home. The bathroom has mould. The kitchen has mice. The landlord has excuses. £520 a month. For a room where the radiator works when it wants and the window lets in the cold like it's inviting it. I work as a Healthcare Assistant. Not in a care home — in a hospital. NHS. King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill. 12-hour shifts. I do nights mostly. 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM. When London sleeps — I work. When London wakes — I try to sleep. But sleep doesn't come easy when the house is loud and the world runs on a different clock to yours. £12.71 an hour. NHS Band 2. After tax — about £1,650 a month. Sounds okay? This is London. Nothing is okay. Expenses: Room rent: £520 Council tax share: £80 (housemates never pay on time) Oyster card: £145 (Woolwich to Denmark Hill — DLR, then Jubilee, then bus — over an hour each way) Phone + internet: £50 (phone is everything — WhatsApp to Mama, roster app, banking) Food: £220 (rice, stew, frozen chicken — I cook everything myself, I can't afford to eat Nigerian food from the shops) Remittance to Lagos: £200 (Mama depends on me — she has high blood pressure, she takes medication every day, she has nothing except what I send) Toiletries and medication: £15 (ibuprofen — my back is finished from lifting patients) Clothes: £15 (Primark — scrubs for work, everything else from charity shops) Unexpected: £30 Left: £375. £375 sounds like money in some places. In London it's nothing. It's the distance between me and the street. And that distance shrinks every month. ════════════ I came to the UK four years ago. From Lagos. Ikeja, specifically. My mother — Mama — she's 59. She sells groundn
