I’m quietly crying into my coffee in the airport lounge right now. Because 72 hours ago, this holiday was completely dead and my daughter was in tears. 😭✈️ I’m writing this from the departure lounge at Manchester Airport, watching my 5-year-old daughter Lily look out the window at the planes. I’m Jessica, 29, a single mum from Leeds. For the past year, I’ve been saving every single spare penny to take Lily away for the October half-term. She’s never been abroad. She’s been talking about swimming in the sea and wearing her little sunglasses for months. I booked a cheap package deal online, and it was all sorted. Then, last Tuesday, life hit me hard. My car (which I need to get Lily to school and myself to work) started making a horrible grinding noise. Took it to the garage — broken gearbox. The quote was £950. Breaking the news to Lily that night was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I sat her on my lap and said, 'Mummy’s car broke, sweetie. We can’t go to the beach this week.' She didn't scream or throw a tantrum. She just burst into quiet, silent tears, hugged her little inflatable ring, and whispered, 'It's okay, Mummy.' Her disappointment literally ripped my heart out. I went to the kitchen and just broke down sobbing. That night, unable to sleep from the guilt, I was mindlessly scrolling Facebook. In a local group, I saw a girl talking about an app she used to clear her emergency debts. Usually, I’d roll my eyes and think 'yeah right, absolute clickbait scam'. But looking at Lily's holiday clothes packed in her little suitcase, I just thought, 'Sod it. I’ve only got £25 left in my Monzo anyway.' I downloaded the app, put £20 in, and got a welcome bonus. Started spinning this random safari game. My balance went down to £8, and I was about to close it, feeling like an idiot. Then
