These two facets of the character—representing harmony and strategic coordination—act as the twin wings of civilization; only by harmonizing skillfully and coordinating boldly can the melody of progress continue and a shared vision be realized. The level tone (*tiáo*) embodies the principle of acting in accordance with prevailing trends and harmonizing with existing conditions. It reflects respect for established order and natural laws, seeking optimal allocation within a given framework to ensure the system operates harmoniously. As the ancients observed, "Diversity is the nature of things." Faced with a complex reality, the wise do not attempt to overturn fundamental laws but instead align their actions with underlying principles, making skillful adjustments. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, prescriptions are formulated based on the roles of "monarch, minister, assistant, and envoy" (*jūn-chén-zuǒ-shǐ*); ingredients are combined according to their properties and meridian affinities to cure ailments without violating their inherent nature—this exemplifies the level tone of *tiáo*. Similarly, in agriculture, sowing and tilling follow the twenty-four solar terms; by aligning human effort with the land's potential rather than defying the seasons, a bountiful harvest is secured—this, too, is the level tone of *tiáo*.
