My name is Niamh. I'm 29 years old. I live in Cork, in Mayfield. Or at least — I used to. Right now I'm crashing on a friend's sofa. She's been kind. But her landlord found out there's a toddler in the flat, and she got a warning letter. Two weeks to sort something permanent, or we both get evicted. I work as a cashier at Lidl. Shifts from 7am to 3pm. Sometimes 4pm if someone calls in sick. I make €12.70 an hour — the National Minimum Wage. After tax that works out to about €1,650 a month. Except now my hours got cut to 24 a week. So it's more like €1,040. Sounds okay? It really isn't. Here are my expenses. Temporary room (friend's sofa, but I pay her something): €500 Gas and electricity (my share): €120 Bus pass: €60 (Leap Card monthly, two buses to work and back) Mia's crèche: €400 (after the National Childcare Scheme subsidy) Groceries: €200 (I buy what's on offer, barely any meat) Nappies and baby supplies: €65 Medication (for anxiety, GP prescribed): €25 Total: €1,370 And I bring home €1,040. That's already -€330 before I even think about paying the crèche arrears. Mia is two and a half now. Her dad left when she was eight months old. But it wasn't a quiet goodbye. He was drinking. He got angry. He hit me — twice in the face, once in the ribs. I was holding Mia. She was screaming. He grabbed my arm, twisted it, threw us both out onto the street in my pyjamas. It was November. Freezing. He locked the door behind us. I stood there with Mia in my arms, no shoes, no phone, no money. A neighbour called the gardaí. They took us to a women's refuge that night. I stayed there for three months. Then a friend from work offered her sofa. He never paid maintenance. The solicitor said — go through the Maintenance Recovery Unit, it'll take time. It's been over a year. Nothing. I haven't told anyone the full story. It's too heavy. I wake up at 5:40. Feed Mia. Dress her. Two buses to the crèche. Two buses to work. Eight hours at the till. "Howya." Scan. Smile.
