Someone left a gold Joker on the front desk. That Joker changed my life. Just not in the way you think. ——— My name is Jamie Cole. I’m 28. I work reception at a gym in Peckham, London. Not a PureGym. Not a David Lloyd. A local gym. Tired machines, changing rooms that smell of bleach, air con that works when it feels like it. My job is the desk. Sign-ups, towels, phone calls, “what time’s spin class?”, lost property. People leave everything: bottles, earphones, socks, shakers. I put it all in a box under the desk. After a month I bin it. My phone — a crack straight across the screen. Battery dies at 3pm. I charge it with a £3 Poundland cable that gets hot. My trainers — Nikes so wrecked I’m embarrassed by them.
