🛑 My name is Chloe Harris. I'm 34. I live in Vancouver, out in the East Van area, not far from Commercial Drive. I rent a room. Not a flat — a room. In a drafty old house with two strangers who, like me, can't afford their own place in this brutal BC rental market. I work as a cashier for a grocery store called Real Canadian Superstore on Grandview Highway. The job runs from 6am to 11pm. I do evening shifts, from 2pm to 10pm. Sometimes till 11pm if we're doing stocktake. I get paid €17.40 an hour — the minimum wage in British Columbia. After tax, that’s around €2,150 a month. Sounds okay? It's really not in Vancouver. Here are my actual monthly expenses: Room rent: €1,100 (includes utilities but no internet — and that’s considered an incredibly lucky find in East Van right now) Internet + phone: €90 (with a basic Rogers plan and my share of the house Wi-Fi) Bus pass: €107 (Compass Card for Zone 1, but the late-night buses like the 20 or the 9 back to my place are always delayed or packed) Food: €420 (I buy No Name brand essentials and hunt for deals, I barely eat meat because prices are just mental) Subscriptions: €11 (Amazon Prime — the only thing I have, and I share the account with a friend) Clothes and shoes: €30 (Value Village on Hastings, everything) Medication: €25 (headache and allergy tablets from London Drugs — no benefits at this job) Unexpected: €50 Left: €317. On paper, having just over €300 left seems like something. In Vancouver, it’s absolutely nothing. Because that €317 is what covers everything I forgot. And everything that will happen tomorrow. And in this city, tomorrow always happens. I've been alone for three years, since I split up with my husband, Nick. He was normal. Didn't hit me. Didn't shout. Just stopped noticing me. I became like a fridge — it's there in the kitchen, but you don't really see it. I packed my bags and left. Since then — I'm alone. In the evening I come home at 10:30pm, if the bus aligns. If it's a heavy shift — 11:30p
